It’s similar to the Echo Dot, although it lacks an auxiliary audio output to plug it into another speaker. It can be paired to a better speaker over Bluetooth, however, and still has complete Google Assistant functionality. The Google Home uses Google Assistant, the voice-recognition system that’s also found on the new Google Pixel phone.
The simple fabric grille, available in four colors, conceals a big 6-inch woofer that puts out room-filling bass, plus two fabric dome tweeters of the same type found in many high-end speakers. It produces an even, natural sound that works with everything from R&B to country to classical, and it doesn’t require an app for adjustments. It can sit on a shelf, hang on a wall, or fit perfectly into IKEA’s Kallax and Expedit shelving systems. But it’s roughly twice the size of Klipsch’s The One II and costs more.

Your Google Home can also double up as a Bluetooth speaker. This feature, introduced in August 2017, gets rid of the hassles of connecting to the Wi-Fi network or enabling the Guest mode and turns your Home device into a Bluetooth speaker in a jiffy. The Bluetooth speaker will disconnect from your Home or Nest device, but it will still be paired. To pair your Chromecast with your Google Home Mini you need to first download the Google Home App and sign-in with your Google account for it to work. Click on the Add (+) button in the bottom right-hand corner and your Android device will start searching for Chromecast enabled devices on your network.
We measured Bluetooth range through one wall at 60 feet, using a Samsung Galaxy S9 phone. This falls short of our other picks’ range, but it’s still very good performance, enough to let you wander from room to room in a modestly sized house with your phone in your pocket. I found that the One II stayed on and paired to my phone after an hour of not playing audio. Another option worth considering is a Bluetooth-equipped soundbar.

Although soundbars are long and thin, designed to sit under TV sets, many of them sound good with music. Their internal speakers are spread farther apart, so the stereo effect is better than with a single tabletop Bluetooth speaker. And many soundbars include a subwoofer, which may deliver louder and deeper bass than most home Bluetooth speakers can produce. Three additional listeners helped me with this guide. One was Lauren Dragan, Wirecutter senior staff writer and headphones editor, who has served as a panelist on most of the wireless-speaker tests we’ve done.
It looks like minimalist Scandinavian furniture, and although it’s a good bit larger than the Klipsch One II, it fits perfectly into IKEA’s Kallax and Expedit shelving systems. The grille is available in black, light gray, blue, or red to suit your taste and decor. Another downside of Bluetooth is that in most cases it slightly degrades sound quality. You can change the default speaker to any of them to play music and audio. If your speaker is not found, you may try to enable pairing mode for the speaker. You need to check the manual of the Bluetooth speaker to find out how to enable pairing mode for the speaker.

Tap on Settings, scroll down and hit the Enable Pairing Mode option located inside the Paired Bluetooth Devices settings. At the top right, tap Settings Audio Paired Bluetooth devices. Your Bluetooth device will now pair with your Google Nest or Home device.
After your device enters pairing mode, open the Bluetooth setting on your iPhone or iPad. Open YouTube or any other music app and play a video or audio. You will now be able to hear the music coming through your ‘Google Home Mini” speakers. In summary, you can use Google Home Mini as a wireless portable speaker to listen to music wirelessly. This will come in handy particularly when you are travelling.

The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended. This item may be a floor model or store return that has been used. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections. Only one person’s calendar can be accessed, and only one person can use the shopping list.
After you follow the steps above for pairing multiple speakers, you’ll need to create a group, which you’ll find in the same overflow menu on the Devices page. Name the group, choose the speakers that you want to be synced, and the next time you ask Google Home to play a song, your music will be beamed to Bluetooth speakers in two different rooms. We tested the multiroom feature using one Home and one Chromecast Audio. Adding Chromecasts throughout your home costs less than buying multiple Sonos speakers, too, though Sonos works with more music services and has an easier-to-use app .
Stream music that plays on your Google Nest or Home speaker or display to your favorite Bluetooth speakers or headphones. Then on the bottom-right corner you will find the “Enable Pairing Mode” option. A message will pop-up saying ‘Pairing Mode Active’, confirming that your Google Home Mini is in pairing mode now. Go to the Google Home App and go to the settings menu on the app. There go to “Paired Bluetooth Devices.” There tap on “Enable Pairing Mode” to prepare your Google Mini Speakers for pairing manually.
From that point forward, your Home should stay connected to the Bluetooth speaker and use it as the default audio device. Questions and other communications will still be handled through the Home device itself—so, for example, if you ask it to set a timer, that won’t happen through the newly-added Bluetooth speaker. To add a Bluetooth speaker, first make sure the speaker is in pairing mode. If you’re not sure how to do that, consult the website of your speaker’s manufacturer—most of the time, you’ll just long-press the Bluetooth button, though.
It will continue playing until you decide to pause or stop playing the song from any of these devices. This means that you can use your phone or any other Bluetooth enabled device as a remote. Pair the Google Home Mini with your Android phone and open up music apps like Spotify, Pandora or Play Music and you’ll be able to ask it to play any song from all of your favourite artists. The Google Home Mini is a great wireless speaker for Google Assistant users. If you’re looking for an affordable and portable Bluetooth speaker to use with your phone, tablet or laptop then the Google Home Mini is a great option. Using this method, you can pair as many devices to your Google Home Mini as you want.
Overall, we think both these speakers are okay for casual, low-level listening, but many of the other wireless speakers that The Wirecutter has tested deliver clearly superior sound quality. He found that the Echo edged out the Home in hearing voice commands through the music it was playing, and that it could hear at levels -2.75 dB lower than the Home with the music playback levels set the same. If you play your music loud, the Echo’s voice recognition might work a little better for you. However, Brent also found that the Home did a better job of recognizing voices while pink noise played from a nearby Bluetooth speaker . Coincidentally, the Home could hear commands at levels -2.75 dB lower than the Echo through the same noise level.
